Three Questions to Consider Before You Buy Your Vacation Home

  1. Is It Enjoyable?

havasu-golf-2 havasu-golf havasu-golf-3My family and I spend a lot of time vacationing in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. We love this destination not only because we have family there, but also because of the many enjoyable things to do. Golfing, boating, fishing, waterskiing, hiking, off-roading, and more always await us on each visit.

The town has two movie theaters, many restaurants, and a variety of shopping opportunities. My boys also enjoy the community skate park perfect for the skateboard, scooter, or BMX enthusiast.

The weather also makes it enjoyable. Of course, it’s extra hot during the summer, but perfect for water sports and floating in the lake or pool. The winters bring milder temperatures, which opens up other adventures and activities.

  1. Is It Accessible?

If you can’t get to your vacation home easily, it’s not likely you’ll visit it often. Lake Havasu is about five hours by car from Orange County or Los Angeles, and four hours from Phoenix. The town also has an easily accessible airport, which can make your travel time shorter.

No matter the mode of travel you use, a vacation spot should be close enough for a quick weekend get-a-way, and yet far enough away that it feels like an escape from the hustle-and-bustle of normal life.

  1. Is It Affordable?

A vacation home should be affordable to buy and affordable to maintain. Homes in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, range from $200,000 – $1.5 million. A standard 3 bedroom, 2 bath home averages about $350,000. Throw in a pool and an RV garage (great for boat storage and other toys) and you’re looking at $450,000. If you want to live on the golf course or have a breathtaking lake view, expect to pay close to $1 million.

No matter your budget, make sure your vacation home truly is a place for vacation, and doesn’t become a maintenance burden when you are not there.

Always remember, long after you sell your vacation home you will still have the memories you created there, so make sure you love it, enjoy it, and visit it as often as possible.
